Reflections of Tony
Bruce Anthony (Tony) King (1934-2017) was an acclaimed photographer who elegantly captured man-made structures, human subjects, and nature over a decades long career. He was born in Toronto, Canada and educated at Hamilton College in Clinton, NY. King valued his opportunity to study at the Sorbonne in Paris before coming to Worcester to work in his grandfather’s business. He married Judith Stoddard and raised a family in Southborough and Kennebunkport. King was a Trustee of the Worcester Art Museum, Worcester Hahnemann Hospital, and Cardigan Mountain School; an honorary member of the Garden Club of America; and served on the board of directors for the Worcester Telegram & Gazette.
King’s ability to capture fleeting moments – whether frost on a windowpane, or the play of light and shadows on a building – draws us in and helps us to see that the common things around us are truly extraordinary.
Present time is my favorite occasion. The moments of people’s lives that interest me most are the normal, everyday parts when they are at home or off making a living.
The Collection
The Reflections of Tony collection was generously donated to WPI by the King Family. The photographs taken by Tony King are part of a four-part series individually titled, Classic, Frost, Light-Dark, and Work Environment.
