Charles Allston Collins (1828-1873)

"Charles Allston Collins", by John Everett Millais, 1850

Charles Allston Collins was an artist and writer associated with the Pre-Raphaelite movement in England. His younger brother was the novelist Wilkie Collins, a close friend and colleague of Dickens. Charles Collins married Dickens's daughter Kate in 1860, despite Dickens's objections based on their difference in age and Collins's poor health. Dickens respected Collins's artistic talents, and asked his son-in-law to illustrate The Mystery of Edwin Drood. Collins was able to finish the design for the wrapper before his failing health forced him to abandon the project.
