Robert Buss (1803-1875)

"Three Watercolors: 'Man, With a Hat', 'Two Windows in a Building', 'Man Walking with a Jug' ", undated, Gift of Daniel and Alice Ryan, MS117.07.02.03

Robert Buss was the son of a master engraver. Early in his career he specialized in theatrical portraits and exhibited extensively at the Royal Academy. Robert Seymour had supplied illustrations for two installments of Pickwick Papers, and after his suicide the publishers needed to find a replacement quickly. They offered the work to Buss who had no experience with etching steel plates. He supplied two illustrations for the third installment of Pickwick but was quickly replaced by Hablot Knight Browne for the remaining sixteen parts.
